Haringey | Spring 2020 “Growing up mathematics” My Journey with Unifiedknowledge by Rujina Akthar Growing up mathematics and science was always drummed into us as important subjects to learn. I always felt intimidated by maths for some reason even though I was able to work things out and got good grades in it. So when it came time to teach my first son maths I became overwhelmed by the many topics that this subject has. Where do I start? Our family has always been committed to home education for our now four children, family directed learning. |
I was fortunate to meet Astehmari Batekun, Principal teacher of Unifiedknowledge, a pioneering panAfrican approach to maths and science. It was everything I was looking for and more. African drumming, dance, maths, science, art and technology all rolled into two weekly sessions. The more I became involved in this learners’ cooperative, the more I was pushed and pulled and stretched in ways that I never even imagined that I would have to take on this journey.

You see the Unifiedknowledge approach to learning is a holistic one. I began to learn about maths and science and it's connection to ancient Africa (in the context of world heritage). It's hard to describe it but it's like a three to nine dimensional mode of learning! Nothing is left out and from one thing many things can be learnt. We have been students of this education for over 5 years and it continues to evolve and change in consistently progressive ways. But that is because it is based on concise and clear fundamentals of who and what it is. It's an educational pedagogy (a principled teaching/learning system) drawn from a panAfrican context and encompasses the UK’s national GCSE curriculum. The term panAfrican was a new idea to me at first, we’ve come to learn that here it means the patterns and ways in unity of cultural values (best practices) from across Africa, both contemporarily and from more ancient reference points.
